Mario was born in a small logging town in western Washington where his appreciation of the forest grew as the trees were cut down. He spent 5 years living in New York City where his appreciation of pizza grew, along with his belly. Having decided he needed an adventure in his life, he rode his mountain bike from Anchorage to Skagway, where he was beguiled by the beauty of the town. He spends his summers here in Skagway and his winters in Washington ski patrolling at Stevens' Pass Ski Resort.
